Abstract

Multicultural societies are characterized by diversity in religion, ethnicity, culture, traditions, and social values, which can serve as a source of social strength while also creating potential conflicts. Such diversity may foster dynamic and inclusive social relations. However, differences in religious and social identities can weaken intergroup relationships and social cohesion when they are not managed constructively. Religious exclusivism, prejudice, intolerance, and polarization may further increase social tensions and threaten harmonious coexistence. This study aims to analyze the role of religious moderation in strengthening social cohesion within multicultural societies. A qualitative approach was employed through a literature review and thematic analysis of previous studies addressing religious moderation, multiculturalism, tolerance, and social cohesion. The findings indicate that religious moderation contributes to strengthening social cohesion through tolerance, respect for differences, interreligious dialogue, social justice, solidarity, and cooperation. Religious moderation also functions as a social mechanism for reducing prejudice, exclusivism, polarization, and potential conflicts arising from differences in religious and social identities. Therefore, religious moderation should not be understood solely as an individual's religious attitude but also as a social foundation for developing harmonious and constructive intergroup relationships. Strengthening religious moderation through education, interreligious dialogue, and collaborative social activities can contribute to the development of an inclusive, tolerant, harmonious, and sustainable multicultural society.
