Abstract

The growing concern over environmental sustainability and the increasing dependence on digital technologies have encouraged higher education institutions to adopt environmentally responsible strategies for campus development. Green Information Technology (Green IT) has emerged as an important approach for reducing the environmental impact of information and communication technology while improving operational efficiency, resource utilization, and institutional sustainability. This study aims to examine the role, benefits, and challenges of Green IT in supporting sustainable campus development within higher education institutions. Using a qualitative literature review approach, this study analyzes and synthesizes relevant academic research published between 2021 and 2025, focusing on Green IT implementation, energy efficiency, digital sustainability, and environmental management in higher education. The findings indicate that Green IT contributes significantly to reducing energy consumption, minimizing paper usage, improving resource management, supporting carbon footprint reduction, and enhancing the efficiency of campus operations. However, several challenges remain, including infrastructure investment requirements, limitations in policy implementation, technological readiness, and insufficient stakeholder awareness and participation. This study concludes that Green IT plays a strategic role in accelerating sustainable campus development by integrating environmental responsibility into digital transformation. Successful implementation requires strong institutional commitment, supportive policies, appropriate technological infrastructure, and active collaboration among university stakeholders to achieve longterm environmental and operational sustainability. Furthermore, the adoption of Green IT can strengthen universities’ capacity to balance technological innovation with environmental responsibility while creating more efficient, sustainable, and digitally resilient academic environments for future development.
